The Downieville Classic includes one of the most demanding downhill races on the planet. There's an epic cross country race that featured a 3,000 foot, exposed, climb in 90 degree weather. Add a unique jumping contest where the contest land in crystal clear river Yuba River, throw in a helping of music, food, and fun and you have what many people feel is the premier combination competition and cultural event in American mountain biking. Read Mark Weir's account of the weekend and stay tuned for more from cross country winner Jason Moeschler and Jump contest king, Bikeskill's Chris Duncan.

July 22, 2005 - NEWS FLASH!!!
The Donwnieville Challenge is on! And on in a BIG way!!!
1

With a total of $10,000 on the line - including $5,000 to the winner who's also able to break Bikeskills' Instructor, and professional racer Mark Weirs' current record of 00:39:48.87 - this is going to be not only one exciting event, but one that a lot of people are going to be talking about for a long time to come!

We figured it was about time that the top racers that have helped make the Downieville Challenge such a fun and entertaining event be compensated for their efforts. And so did the people at Santa Cruz bicycles, Hayes Brakes, Photomed Technologies, and the extraordinary surgeons and staff at Mt Tam Orthopedics.

Saturday's downhill event pay out will be as follows:

1st $2,500 with a 100% bonus for a record breaking time
2nd $2,000
3rd $1,500
4th $1,000
5th $500

We'll continue to update the story, and provide race day results. In the meantime, check out the event's main website at: Downieville classic!

A Bikeskills Milestone: Our first clinic conducted outside the continental United States!

And what a great place for that first, the famed North Shore of Oahu, Hawaii. Many people are well aware that the “North Shore” is the place to ride some of the biggest and best waves on the planet; but mountain biking? What about the locals? What would they think of California Boy Joe Lawwill invading their turf?

For those of you lucky enough to spend some time with Chris Duncan this past week, you may have been a bit disappointed that he was not able to perform any of his trademark moves. With all the rain we had this week the big jumps could not be ridden. Chris felt bad that he couldn't show the locals his jumping prowess. So, we did the next best thing and headed south yesterday to hit some dryer jumps and get you some fresh photos. So click on the "T.V." to the right for a phat sequence pictorial of Chris pulling one of his many tricks! Stay tuned for more photos from the days session, which will be posted on the photos page.

Today we were treated to perfect conditions on the mountain! All the days previous rain made the dirt absolutely perfect. Wet roots were still dicey, but with newly learned skills the crew all made it through without mishap, well that is except for our surgeon in the group who would beg to differ. Sergio who rendezvoused with the group mid way, thus missing out on the photo op, was doing well until a steep technical section got the better of him. He impressed the group with his ability to shake it off and carry on....way to go Sergio the surgeon!

Two more clinics in the books! We didn't get so lucky with the rain this time, but regardless we carried on. Chris layed out some framework for the jump crowd and got the guys doing things they had only dreamed about, while Joe spent the majority of the time in the classroom covering everything from tire choices to suspension set up and what that red knob on their shocks does. After the classroom portion, the group went down to the "Goat Pasture" and practiced drop offs, Bunny Hops, J-hops, riding through a simulated root section, and then used the skills learned to get over a pretty good sized log.

Due to the rain we don't have any pictures to post this time.

Stay tuned for the next clinic which will be posted on the schedule page soon!
